First Chief Minister of Nagaland – P.Shilu Ao (1963-1966)

The First Chief Minister of Nagaland was P.Shilu Ao, who held his office from 1 December 1963 to 14 August 1966. In 1960, Ao resigned from government service and entered politics joining the Naga People’s Convention.In February 1961, under the Nagaland Regulation Act, a 42-member Interim Body with a five-member Executive Council was set up with Ao as the Chief Executive Councillor. In the first state elections of Nagaland in the year 1964 he was elected from Impur Assembly constituency as member of Legislative Assembly. The Interim Body and the Executive Council became the Nagaland Legislative Assembly and the Nagaland Cabinet and a five-member ministry with Ao as the first Chief Minister was sworn in by Vishnu Sahay, the Governor of Assam and Nagaland the same day.

Second Chief Minister of Nagaland – T.N. Angami (1966-1969)

T.N. Angami was Second Chief Minister of Nagaland from 14 August 1966 to 22 Feb 1969. He was a Naga politician who served as the first Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly and the second Chief Minister of the North East Indian state of Nagaland. Angami began his political life in 1951 when he resigned from his job as an office assistant to join the Naga National Council, an organisation that he went on to head as its president. In 1964, Angami was elected its first Speaker. Following a no confidence motion against the government, Ao resigned as Chief Minister and was succeeded by Angami who served from August, 1966 to February, 1969.

Chief Minister of Nagaland – Hokishe Sema (1969-1974, 1986-1988)

Hokishe Sema was the Third Chief Minister of Nagaland from 22 Feb 1969 to 26 Feb 1974, 29 Oct 1986 to 7 Aug 1988.Sema became a member of the interim body of the new state government in 1961.In 1964, Sema was elected unchallenged to the first legislative assembly of the newly-formed Nagaland state from Akuluto constituency.He lost his seat to Rano M. Shaiza in 1977.In the 1980s he was the leader of the Congres.He was elected to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly six times during which time he also served as the Finance Minister of the state and as the president of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee.From April 1983 to March 1986 he served as Governor of Himachal Pradesh and was later a member of the Rajya Sabha. Hokishe Sema died on 31 January 2007 of Cardiac arrest.

Chief Minister of Nagaland – Vizol Angami (1974-1975, 1977-1980)

Vizol Angami was the Fourth Chief Minister of Nagaland from 26 Feb 1974 to 10 March 1975, 25 Nov 1977 to 18 April 1980.He became the Chief Minister of Nagaland as part of the United Democratic Front (Nagaland). From 1953 to 1956, he served as the Principal of the Naga National High School, Kohima. He was imprisoned twice-1956 and 1957 on political grounds. He also served as the Vice President of the Naga People’s Convention from 1957 to 1960.He is also one of the founding members of the Kohima Science College, Jotsoma in 1961.Vizol was again re-elected uncontested to the Nagaland Assembly in 1977 and became the Chief Minister for the second time but it again collapsed in 1980.He was died on 3 March 2008.

Chief Minister of Nagaland – John Bosco Jasokie (1975, 1980-1982)

John Bosco Jasokie was the Fifth Chief Minister of Nagaland from 10 March 1975 to 20 March 1975 and 5 June 1980 to 18 November 1982. He became the Chief Minister of Nagaland on two occasions as part of the Naga National Democratic Party.He was earlier a guide for Allied forces during the 2nd World War.He was also a composer and an accomplished singer of his time. His famous composition was the famed Angami song “Ara Kezievi”, which roughly translates as “My Beautiful Homeland”.He died on the 19 October 2005 at his residence in Kohima.

Chief Minister of Nagaland – S.C.Jamir (1980, 1982-1986, 1989-1990, 1993-2003)

S.C. Jamir was the Sixth Chief Minister of Nagaland from 18 April 1980 to 5 June 1980, 18 November 1982 to 28 Oct 1986, 25 Jan 1989 to 10 May 1990 and 22 Feb 1993 to 6 March 2003.He has served as the Chief Minister of Nagaland, Governor of Maharashtra, Governor of Gujarat, Governor of Goa and Governor of Odisha.He was awarded the third-highest Civilian Award in India, Padma Bhusan in 2020 for his work in public affairs.Jamir was elected and nominated as the first Lok Sabha Member from the state of Nagaland in year 1961.He was appointed as the Parliamentary Secretary to Jawaharlal Nehru, then Prime Minister who was also in charge of the Ministry of External Affairs.He was a member of UN delegation in 1962.

Chief Minister of Nagaland – K.L. Chishi (1990)

K.L.Chishi Jasokie was the Seventh Chief Minister of Nagaland from 16 May 1990 to 19 June 1990.He  is an Indian politician from Indian National Congress.He was the founder chief of the Nationalist Democratic Movement, a political party in the Indian state of Nagaland.He left Indian National Congress to join Bharatiya Janata Party.In January 2018, he rejoined Indian National Congress on 14 March 2019.

Vamuzo Phesao was the Eighth Chief Minister of Nagaland from 19 June 1990 to 2 April 1992. His government was dismissed and President’s rule was imposed in 1992.He died on  22 March 2000.

Neiphiu Rio was the Ninth Chief Minister of Nagaland from 16 March 2003 to 3 Jan 2008, 12 March 2008 to 24 May 2014 and 8 March 2018 to Incumbent. Rio was first elected to Nagaland Legislative Assembly as Congress (I) candidate from the Northern Angami-II constituency during the 7th General Elections of 1989. Rio has played a key role in setting up the Music Task Force, the first music industry in the country.He was awarded The Mother Teresa Millennium award, for his outstanding leadership and contributions to politics in Kolkata in the year 2007.

Chief Minister of Nagaland – T.R. Zeliang (2014-2017, 2017-2018)

T.R.Zeliang was the Tenth Chief Minister of Nagaland from 24 May 2014 to 22 Feb 2017 and 19 July 2017 to 8 March 2018. Zeliang contested the Nagaland Assembly elections of 1982 and 1987 unsuccessfully from 6 Tening Assembly Constituency. He served as Minister of State for Information and Tourism during 1989–90 and as Minister of State for Relief & Rehabilitation from 1994 to 1998. During 1998 – 2003, he was the Minister for Environment and Forests and Geology and Mining under the Ministry of S C Jamir. He formed Nagaland Congress in year 2003 and later merged it into Nagaland People’s Front(NPF). He won the assembly elections of 2008, 2013 and 2018 from Peren.

Chief Minister of Nagaland – Shurhozelie Liezietsu (2017)

Shurhozelie Liezietsu was the Eleventh Chief Minister of Nagaland from 22 Feb 2017 to 19 July 2017. He is the president of Nagaland People’s Front.He joined politics in year 1969 and was one of the founding members of Nagaland’s first regional party United Democratic Front(UDF) and later Naga National Democratic Party(NNDP).In 2002 he was crucial in the formation of Nagaland’s People Front(NPF).He has been Member of Legislature Assembly(MLA) eight times and held several important portfolios in a political career spanning for nearly five decades.
